Mission:
In 1994 the planning staff of Albemarle County recommended to the Planning Commission
the addition of 3800 acres to the growth area as part of the Comprehensive Plan review.
After a year of study the Commission recommended the addition of 1800 acres to the Board
of Supervisors. The Board rejected the additional acreage and instead appointed a
Development Area Initiatives Steering Committee (DISC) made up of citizens from a multitude
of disciplines to explore avenues to in-fill the existing growth areas prior to adding any
expansions. An outside consulting firm was hired to aid the DISC in 1997.

Goals for Density and the Model for New Development and Redevelopment:
Goal for Housing:
If adopted, the DISC recommendations could result in sweeping changes to Albemarle County's planning and zoning policies. The goals of the DISC as outlined above are designed to encourage increased density, mixed use planned development, increased connectivity between neighborhoods, and pedestrian oriented transportation alternatives. As a natural extension, the initiative would seek to discourage growth in rural areas. These are concepts which have real merit but which are not always well received by those effected by them. DISC is expected to complete its work this Summer and send a final report to the Board of Supervisors in Fall 1999. Tools/Services
