Mission Statement: The Environmental Education Center envisions an educated citizenry that protects and restores its environmental heritage. For almost ten years, we have addressed environmental education at the local scale through the relationship of specific places (schoolyards, wastersheds), community projects (establishing habitat areas, river monitoring) and curricula (developing habitat mapping skills, watershed education). Our approach to these connections is both unique and complimentary to our partners in the community. As an independent non-profit organization, we have the flexibility to focus on the specific relationship people have with the local environment within a variety of ecological, political, and property boundaries. Projects include:
Pariticpation of area schools in the Community Habitat Network and Community Watershed Project, demonstrating conservation that students can design and own.
Coordination of Field Teams for the Rivanna River Basin Project to gather critical benchmark data about the health of our waterways.
Summer Environmental Education Camp for 6-9th graders that mixes fun, learning, and service.
Green Lights Directory of oganizations and resources to help citizens get involved.
Commmunity Events: Earth Week, Eco-Summit, Student Water Congress.
Teacher Education/ Training to expand local environmental literacy.
