Mission Statement: The Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club is Central Virginia's branch of the nation's largest and most effective grassroots environmental organization. Through the vigilance and activism of its volunteers, the Group works to preserve the integrity and viability of the region's natural ecosystems, and to protect public health from environmental hazards. We promote a holistic, bioregional vision of the human and natural community that empowers citizens to make informed political, economic, and personal choices on issues that affect the environment. Piedmont Group leaders appear before such bodies as the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, Charlottesville City Council, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization to testify in favor of environmentally sound public policy. The Group endorses conservation-minded candidates for public office and works for their election. Our concerns include parks, forests, air and water quality, wildlife, recycling and waste management, agriculture, transportation, and land-use planning. On many of these issues we cooperate closely with other local organizations. The Piedmont Group's student branch at Albemarle High School brings a message of conservation and community involvement to the next generation of environmentalists. As an integral part of the Virginia Chapter and the National Sierra Club, we interpret state and national conservation issues to our members. The Group also promotes responsible outdoor recreation through educational programs and outings led by qualified volunteers.

Volunteer Projects: The Piedmont Group holds free public meetings at 7:30 P.M. on the third Wednesday of each month, September through May, in St. Mark Lutheran Church at Ivy and Alderman Roads in Charlottesville. Call our voice mail/ information line at 961-9633 for directions and information on each month's featured program.
