What is Tradelocal?

Founded in 1998, Tradelocal is a group of concerned individuals and local businesses who want to promote the local Charlottesville economy and protect the environment. Tradelocal has coordinate radio programs, press conferences, tabling at public events, and fundraisers. We are an all-volunteer organization.

How does it work?

We have created a directory of local businesses. By accessing the directory electronically or on paper, consumers will be able to find the goods and services they seek through local producers or suppliers. We will be promoting local economy by creating social, cultural and economic events which connect local people with each other and with local vendors, including:

  • An internet, paper, and telephone based clearinghouse for local goods and services
  • Regular potluck dinners addressing local issues
  • Barter fairs and flea markets
  • Music events
  • Local coupon books
  • And more...

How do I get involved?

You are welcome to attend any of our meetings and help us move our vision forward. Come if you have specific talents to offer or if you just want to listen to the discussion. Call 434-760-1297, or email us at tradelocal@yahoo.com to find out when our next meeting is going to take place.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no membership fee for individuals to join. We have received a grant to start this project. Businesses may get involved in the Local Vendor Group for a free introductory period, after which they will be required to pay membership fees.

Who is Tradelocal affiliated with?

TradeLocal is not affiliated with any political party or religious organization.

Why is it called Tradelocal?

Money spent at local businesses stays in town, changing hands numerous times, recircluating and strengthening the economy of our community along the way.  Money spent at chain stores leaves on the first bus.  So think global, buy local!
